I am really quite shocked that I had never seen this Movie before.
It was made in 1934-5/ And the Female lead was Anna Sten.
I was very impressed by her acting and I do not know why she is not
a more Famous Name!
If you have seen it, I thing you will agreee. |

I just read something about her in a biography I read about Samuel Goldwyn. Let me look through it again and see what I can find out! _________________ 'Tis better to have loved and lost than to have never loved at all. |

While Anna Sten was a beautiful woman, she did not go over well with American audiences. They stayed away from her movies in droves, even though the reviews were favorable. Despite all the time and money Goldwyn put into grooming her as his next big star, after the failure of her third movie, The Wedding Night, with fifteen months left on her contract, she annulled the contract and went to London, where she made three more movies. Then she disappeared from the public eye. She died of a heart attack November 12, 1993 in New York City at the age of 84.
Because of her accent, I think it made it difficult for audiences to understand her, despite all the money Goldwyn spent on diction lessons. While she may have been unlucky in the movies, she was definitely lucky in love: she was married to the same chap for 61 years. _________________ 'Tis better to have loved and lost than to have never loved at all. |

^ Hey good post ... thanks for the info on Anna Sten ...
I saw her in "The Wedding Night" and didn't think it too bad. It's actually a well directed movie and her performance opposite Gary Cooper, altho a bit timid, is still a good one. She's certainly sweet on the eyes. The camera wasn't her enemy; that's for sure ...
The fan magazines of the mid thirties tried like the devil to put her over with readers. Perhaps too much, and of course Goldwyn was encouraging much of this. She got full two-page spreads, glamour photos, extensive write-ups about her upbringing and she could be seen modeling the new seasons gowns, as many did. She was being highly touted as the new Garbo or Marlene Dietrich, (or even Pola Negri) but as you said, audiences stayed away ...
LB Mayer tried the same thing with Luise Rainer and it was a totally different story. Audiences and critics alike couldn't get enough and packed theaters ... |
